NACTEC - Your Horizons Are Limitless

ABOUT OUR PROGRAM
Together the Bering Strait School District (BSSD) and Nome Public Schools (NPS) developed the Northwestern Alaska Career and Technical Center (NACTEC), a joint-venture regional vocational training center located in Nome. NACTEC was designed to provide Bering Strait School District and Nome Public Schools high school students with the necessary resources and skills for employment opportunities, the pursuit of postsecondary education, and independent living skills through instruction in four focus areas: career and technical skills, career exploration, life skills, and work readiness skills.

OUR PROGRAMS
Intensive 2 – 4 Week Session
These sessions are offered throughout the school year to high school students of northwestern Alaska in the following areas: Art, Aviation, Business Communications, Building Trades (NCCER), Career Exploration, Career Fair/Anchorage Career Fair, Careers in the Legal System, Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), College Registration in Alaska, Driver’s Education, Early Childhood Education, Emergency Trauma Technician (ETT), Entrepreneurship (Start Your Own Business), Field Biology (Salmon Lake Camp), Financial Leadership (Money Management), Fishing Industry/Outboard Motors, Food Service, Preparing for Postsecondary Education, Guiding: Outdoor Leadership, Health Career Exploration, Introduction to the Health Field, Jr. High Career Exploration, Machine Shop, Marketing, Metal Fabrication, Small Engine Repair, Video Technology, and Welding. Certification and college credit are available in many NACTEC offerings.

APPLICATION PROCESS
High school students, with the assistance of community teachers, complete a NACTEC application for the session of their choice. NACTEC teachers select students based on the application and recommendations from the student’s school. Students fly into Nome from their home community and live at the NACTEC House for the duration of the session. Here, students develop life skills such as cooking, laundry, time management, and how to live with a roommate. The instruction of life skills enables high school students to develop the resources needed to live and work independently. These skills, often underdeveloped in students of our region, are essential of any person entering the work force, an apprentice program, or postsecondary education.

LIFE AT NACTEC
Students start their day at NACTEC with survival swimming and first aid class at the City of Nome swimming pool. Throughout the rest of the day, students receive training in the focus area of their choice, as well as develop work readiness skills, such as resume writing, job interviewing skills, appropriate workplace etiquette and money management. Recreational and physical activities, as well as cooking and other life skills take place in the evenings and weekends.

Students explore a variety of careers through job shadowing at sites throughout Nome. Nome and regional professionals also provide in-depth discussions and firsthand knowledge of their career fields during guest lectures, visits with NACTEC students, and mock interviews. The options and opportunities for a college education are explored at Northwest Campus/University of Alaska-Fairbanks. Throughout this process, students are assisted in postsecondary education and career planning.

Students attending NACTEC have the opportunity to earn dual credit from Northwest Campus/University of Alaska-Fairbanks. Dual university credit allows NACTEC students to become more marketable upon entry to the workforce or in pursuit of postsecondary education.

At NACTEC, students are being motivated to pass the Alaska High School Graduation Qualifying Exam, to graduate from high school, to formulate career and postsecondary goals, and to develop the skills necessary to be successful in the world of work. It is not designed to replace high schools, rather has been developed to supplement the community schools programs.
